What was the first home security system?

Closed-circuit television, invented during World War II for military use, was not widespread in the 1960s, and the Browns proposed using the technology to create the first modern home security system. They filed a patent for their device in 1966, citing Marie as lead inventor. It was approved three years later. [1]

Alexander Miles, who contributed to the elevator industry, was an African-American inventor of the late 19th century who transcended racial barriers in the United States. Miles, born in Duluth, Minnesota, designed an elevator that was able to open and close its own doors and the elevator shaft doors. [4]

Brown’s daughter, Norma, was able to follow in her mom’s footsteps by becoming a nurse and an inventor. If you search her name on Google Patents, it appears that Norma Brown invented devices such as a “bra barrier device,” “interactive furniture for dieters,” and a “ladder including storage compartments.”11 Feb 2021 [6]

In the 1980s, security became a large part of home automation technology, as automated garage doors, infrared controls, and fiber optics became mainstream. These systems became more affordable in the 1990s.27 Feb 2020 [7]

When was a CCTV camera first used? CCTV (Closed circuit television) was first used in 1942 in Germany when the system was installed to observe the launch of V-2 rockets. Unlike a TV broadcast that can be viewed by anybody with an antenna, CCTV footage cannot be viewed by people outside the circuit.6 Apr 2015 [8]

She was a Black nurse and inventor. Born Marie Van Brittan in Jamaica, Queens, New York City, in 1966 she had the idea for a home surveillance device. She applied for a patent along with her husband Albert Brown in 1966 for a closed-circuit television security system. [10]

This would lead to many nights where Marie was left alone in her home at night. The crime rate in her neighborhood was very high, and inspired by the prolonged length of time it took the police to arrive in her neighborhood, Brown invented the first home security system. [11]

The camera picked up images that would reflect on the monitor via a wireless system. The monitor could be placed in any part of the house to allow you to see who was at the door. There was also a voice component to enable Brown to speak to the person outside.11 Apr 2016 [12]

The OTIS ELEVATOR COMPANY can trace its origins to 1853, when Elisha Graves Otis introduced the first safety passenger elevator at the Crystal Palace Convention in New York City. His invention impressed spectators at the convention, and the first passenger elevator was installed in New York City in 1856. [14]

Miles improved the method of the opening and closing of elevator doors and the shaft door when an elevator was not on that floor.
