In January 2018, home security giant ADT announced that it was buying competitor Guardian for $44 million. The move signals a consolidation in the home security industry and comes as both companies grapple with how to best serve customers in an increasingly competitive market.

ADT has been in the home security business for over 140 years and is the largest provider of residential security systems in the United States. Guardian, founded in 1998, is a much smaller player in the industry but has a strong presence in the Northeast.
